The Benchmark of Beer and Food Events Sells Out to the Public in 10 Minutes

Boulder, CO • March 24, 2010

WHAT: The Brewers Association (presenters of the Great American Beer Festival℠ and CraftBeer.com) is returning to Washington, D.C. for the third SAVOR: An American Craft Beer & Food Experience.SAVOR, the quintessential beer and food event, is a must-attend happening for fermented beverage lovers and foodies alike. Attendees will enjoy craft beers from 70 small and independent craft brewers who will personally pair their offerings with sweet and savory appetizers. Educational salons and private tasting salons will provide additional opportunities to interact with some of America’s most talked-about craft brewers.

WHERE: National Building Museum, 401 F Street NW, Washington, D.C. 20001
WHY: As American palates continue to become more sophisticated, many have discovered that beer is the perfect complement to food. The National Restaurant Association Chef Survey (see results) recently cited “food-beer pairings” as the number five alcohol and cocktails trend to watch for in 2010 (“locally-produced wine and beer” topped that same trends list).

New for 2010

Enhanced Cuisine

The Beer Chef, Bruce Paton, worked with Federal City Caterers in selecting items suitable for harmonious food-beer pairings. In addition, this year’s appetizer selections are inspired by menu items from participating craft brewers who are also restaurateurs.

More Breweries

This year’s event will feature 70 independent craft brewers pouring 140 craft beers, representing every region of the U.S. The number of participating breweries is up from 65 in 2009 and 48 in 2008, SAVOR’s inaugural year.

Private Tasting Salons

Private tasting salons allow attendees to spend time with some of the luminaries of craft brewing as they share their “vintage reserve” beers. Participation is limited to 30 people, and the salons sold out during SAVOR advance ticket sales (offered exclusively to previous attendees, Brewers Association members and American Homebrewers Association members).

Educational Salons

Educational salons, seating 90 people in an auditorium, will feature the culinary stylings of a number of well-known chefs and craft brewers.

  • Zaytinya Head Chef and Top Chef Season 6 contestant Mike Isabella will be paired with Gary Fish of Deschutes Brewery for “Pairing Beer and Foods.”
  • Granville Moore’s Executive Chef Teddy Folkman is paired with Brewery Ommegang. Beer Director Greg Engert for “Belgian Style Beers and Food.”
  • Chef Kyle Bailey and Pastry Chef Tiffany McIsaac from Birch and Barley (one of D.C.’s hottest restaurants) and Churchkey will present food with beers from multiple participating breweries.

Strong Demand for a New Type of Event

SAVOR tickets sold out lightning fast in 2010. Tickets allotted for advance sales (offered exclusively to previous attendees, Brewers Association members and American Homebrewers Association members) sold out in under 48 hours. Public tickets sold out within approximately 10 minutes of going on sale.

The demand for SAVOR tickets signals a new type of craft beer event that more and more people are interested in attending—one where beer and food pairings shine, along with the rock stars of craft brewing who present and pour their creations. The strong ticket sales also speak volumes about the high quality of craft beer being produced in the U.S. by small and independent breweries, and the growing demand for excellent craft beer and food pairings.

By comparison, in 2009, SAVOR tickets sold out in just over three months.

National Angle: Craft Brewer Success

In the late 1970s there were 42 brewing companies in the U.S. Today there are more than 1,500 breweries—and the majority of those are craft brewers (smaller-producing and independently owned). Craft brewers are known for making fuller flavored beers in small batches and for their passion and innovation in the art of brewing. These breweries are why the average American now lives within 10 miles of a brewery. In 2009, when other brewers saw a slowdown in sales, small and independent craft brewers saw sales dollars increase 10.3 percent and volume increase 7.2 percent.
